Annike bowed before Serpentis's desk. Her mouth ached from her ill-advised attempt to bite the Sheriff, but she hadn't taken any pain medication beyond Tylenol. She needed all her wits about her when dealing with Serpentis. Even if she was asking for his help. Especially if she was asking for his help.
Her stomach clenched. She had failed her master once again. Yes, she knew that it had been beyond her power to succeed in the first place, but still she had tried. Her reckless tenacity was what remained of her humanity. Well, that and her capacity to love...
Annike looked down. Serpentis was displeased at her. Now was not the time to be thinking of him like that.
"Master," she said timidly. Serpentis was the only one who could make her feel so helpless. Not because of the blood bond--she had resisted that before and survived for decades without his vitae--but because of her feelings for him.
"If I may...I require aid in healing my wounds."
She had to speak carefully around her three missing teeth, trying to have as little a lisp as possible. She couldn't stand the thought of this--this gap in her appearance--this imperfection. And she couldn't bear going to a plastic surgeon--she had never sought the services of one before, never. And now, to look as a gap-toothed peasant or trailer park trash. She couldn't bear it.
She closed her eyes and waited for her master's response.
