Gangrel rarely reveal themselves to their progeny at the time of the Embrace. Instead, they watch prospective childer for an extended period of time before dooming another mortal to vampiric existence, then strike without warning. The new childe is abandoned to its own devices (though the sire and usually a few other Gangrel keep an eye on him) and must learn to survive on his own. If he does so well enough, eventually his sire will come forward and induct him into the ways of the clan. If not, incompetent neonates tend to take care of themselves in fatal fashion. A sire whose neonate fails can suffer a loss of prestige, depending upon how fast and how emphatic the failure was.
The Embrace: Gangrel embrace for a variety of reasons, but do not pass on the Curse lightly or commonly. If a generalization must be made, it could be said that Gangrel prefer to Embrace loners, those who have the physical and emotional resiliency to survive the shock of the change. The sire’s training, what little there is, tends to be gruff and harsh; most Gangrel most discover the vagaries of unlife largely on their own.
The Gangrel are famous - or at least mostly blamed - for siring the greatest numbers of Caitiff. Common practice among the Clan is to stalk a potential mortal, learning about their habits, personality, and strengths. If they are found acceptable, then the Gangrel will typically Embrace them as a childe, then leave them immediately, to test their ability to adapt and survive in the World of Darkness. Should this training session be successful (i.e. the novice Gangrel manages not to get themselves killed or go insane), then they are welcomed as clanmembers. If they do fail this test, then they are left alone with no knowledge of their sires or Clans, resulting in Caitiff. Extreme cases of insanity or mutation are culled. Loose cannons are too much of a risk in a Clan well-known for their ability to survive in adverse circumstances.
Appearance: Gangrel’s harsh unlifestyle and lack of interest in fashion often make them seem rugged and wild. Couple this with the animal features common among the Gangrel sometimes appear downright frightening. Some mortals and Kindred find a certain predatory beauty in the Gangrel, though this can lead to a dangerous judgment of the Gangrel's intentions.
Havens: Gangrel often make no permanent havens, sleeping wherever they can find shelter from the sun. Gangrel with sufficient mastery of the Protean Discipline sleep in the very earth, lairing in parks and other spots of natural terrain. Although many Gangrel prefer to lair in the wild or travel from place to place, they are as vunerable to attack by werewolves as other Kindred are, and so they are often forced to remain in the city’s confines.
Weaknesses: Gangrel are very close to the Beast Within; as they succumb to it, it leaves its mark on their bodies. Every time a Gangrel frenzies, she gains an animalistic feature. It might be ears, a pelt, a tail, catlike eyes, a snarling voice, tusks, even feathers. Every five such features acquired permanently reduce the Gangrel’s Social Attributes.
The Embrace: Gangrel antitribu draw their childer from the ranks of those who possess a tenacity or survival instinct. Uncomplicated folk, Sabbat Gangrel often Embrace individuals like themselves when they bother to Embrace at all, so that they may have packmates of similar outlooks. Strangely enough, Hunters often act as patrons and mentors to their childer, perhaps out of animalistic duty as alpha to their pack members. City Gangrel choose particularly resilient folk for their childer, or those who would bear a grudge against the mortal world; thus, many City Gangrel come from the ranks of the homeless or foreign cultures resigned to ghettoes in the vast urban sprawls. For some in inexplicable reason, many of the Country Gangrel in North America seem to have Native American ancestry, and some suspect this has a good deal to do with the Sabbat’s prominence during the time of the American Manifest Destiny.
As mentioned before, many Sabbat Gangrel have Mentors, and some few become Black Hand members or accomplished Sabbat with some measure of Sabbat Status. When Gangrel forsake Humanity, it is usually in favor of the Path of the Feral Heart or, far less common, the heretical Path of Lilith.
Appearance: Most Gangrel don’t give a about their appearances, considering vanity secondary to functionality. They typically appear sloppy or disheveled. Despite their abandonment of their Gypsy heritage, many Gangrel still bear swarthy features and dark hair. Some City Gangrel have adopted the slick, fashionable styles of the mortal world, but only as a form of "urban camouflage" that allows them to stalk their prey with greater ease. Often Gangrel are Embraced without a great deal of forethought, and many still bear unshaven beards or unkempt hair (though they may remedy these rugged features as they rise each night, if they wish).
Havens: Gangrel of both ilk are equally at home in the ground, under rocks or hidden behind garbage cans. Most Gangrel eschew permanent havens, communal or otherwise, and have adopted the nomadic unlifestyle. Any place a Gangrel may rise at sunset and stalk her prey is fine. Gangrel also keep few possessions other than what they can easily carry, so they have no real need for a place to cache large collections of belongings.
Weaknesses: As with other Gangrel, the Beast Within never lurks too far from Sabbat Gangrel, leaving its indelible mark on their bodies. Whenever a Sabbat Gangrel frenzies, she gains an animalistic feature. These animal traits should be subtle yet unnerving--a tough hide, pronounced fangs, slitted pupils, etcetera. In recent nights, many City Gangrel seem to have acquired the features of urban animals, like rats, pigeons, dogs and even certain insects.
