Location: Under Manhattan Public Library
It's Use:
Meeting place for the Tremere of New York and labratory-school for new members.Description:
Affiliation: Camarilla
location: New York City, Public Library ( Manhattan )
It's use: Chantry for the Tremere Clan of the City
Description of the building:
Located underneath the New York Public Library the Chantry Manhattan is the largest Chantry north of Miami. As a result it has many, many layers of defensive rituals and spells cast. It is accessible only through a hidden latch leading to what seems to be an empty closet sized room. To get past there, one must push the walls bricks in a certain order while reciting the activation words to make it function. After a moment one wall slides away revealing a stairwell going way down, an open grated elevator beside it. Four ghouls, personal servants of Meiko guard this elevator.
The elevator opens up onto what for all events looks like a wide white veined black marble dance floor, surrounded by tall high chairs in a circle. On the floor are various sigils surrounding a 32 pointed star in a circle.
Across from the entrance is another hallway leading to a library, residences for the lowest ranked members, as well as their labratories and classrooms. A stairwell up , near the library leads to the 2nd floor part of the library out of which like spokes 8 halls travel outwards labratories, studies, classrooms and storage rooms filling the halls. At the end is a circular hall which connects all of them making it appear like the hub of a wheel. Artificial light feeds a veritable garden where the Mages grow their spell components and so forth. A last stairwell, guarded by 2 more Ghouls at all times, leads up to the Regents Private Residence, their Laboratory, Study, Library, and Private Sitting Room.
Various Defenses:
Deny the Intruder has been cast; There are very few listings of the building in any records, and is very difficult to find via conventional methods (+5 difficulty to trace).
There is a Warding Circle vs Ghouls, a Warding Circle vs Lupines, a Warding Circle vs Kindred, and a Warding Circle vs Ghosts. Ghouls need to gain 3 successes on thier Willpower roll to avoid damage and penetrate the ward. Wraiths, Vampires, and Werewolves need to achieve 2 successes on thier Willpower rolls to continue forward. All warding circles require a difficulty 8 Willpower roll by the affected person or take 3 bashing and stop. With the exception of the circle vs ghosts, each extend 20 feet from the building walls in all directions, giving them a total radius of 40 feet, (vs ghosts only extends to the building walls: 20 feet in radius). Each have been augmented by Vires Acquirit Eundo, allowing them to last well beyond the year-and-a-day normal duration.
There are three other areas in the immediate area that have the same warding circles placed on them. The circles are smaller, and directly adjoin the chantry's own circles, though if someone were to stay on the concrete walkways, and not stray, they should not encounter them. These are placed to prevent someone from encountering the chantry's own warding circles and use thier boundries to pinpoint the location of the chantry. Someone attempting to do that will find that they encounter circles over a much wider and less definate area.
The front door of the building contains a Ward vs Ghouls, a Ward vs Lupines, a Ward vs Kindred, and a Ward vs Ghosts as does all of the outside wall faces. In all cases where an actual ward is set on a door, there is a similar ward placed on the knob or handle of the door as well.
Taking advantage of the fact that all modern knobs are hollow, the outside knob of the front door is the focus of a Engaging the Vessel of Transferrence. Thus making the first mortal to touch it a ghoul of the last kindred to use it, and then subject to any current wards and warding circles. The trap is easily reset by another kindred using the knob.
For this reason, unless this site is used exclusively by one vampire only, any who live here or visit often will likely become bonded to the others who live there. However, those who live here are often aware of the knob and it's power and so simply wearing gloves will prevent them from becoming bonded, though at the expense of not resetting the trap. Bare skin contact is a requirement of the Vessel of Transferrence, but not of the wards themselves. Should someone attempt to defeat the wards by wearing gloves, they will be in for a rude surprise.
Each window and the one outside door have electric door-sensors on them. These simple sensors feed into a mundane security setup on the whole building that will call the fire department if the smoke detectors ever go off, or call the 'main' chantry with a pre-recorded message if the perimeter sensors are triggered for more than 20 seconds without being reset from the main security box (found on the wall between the kitchen accessway and the bottom-floor bedroom door).
(New Members)
When it comes to adding a new person to the chantry, not all of the wards are immediately attuned to the person. New arrivals must make themselves known either by normal correspondence with the regent before thier arrival into the city, or by use of a Rite of Introduction (either by thier own use of the ritual, or by having one of the chantry-members vouch for them by doing it in thier stead). Only once they have made this contact and met with someone of the chantry, will the process of opening the chantry up to them be done. The Warding Circle vs Kindred placed on the building itself, and the two wards on the front door are the only wards initially attuned to the individual. The wards outside the building are not attuned to the person until 3 months after they have been with the chantry; don't stray from the path to the chantry or you will get burned.
Each person is required to donate three points of blood upon entering the chantry as a member, and donate an additional point of blood per month, for the explained purpose of attuning the wards when neccessary. This blood is usually kept in several Sanginous Phials, in the Regent's quarters. This has the side-effect of giving the regent quite a bit of control, should one of the chantry-members become errent in thier ways.
Affiliation: Tremere ( unknown to any others not of that chantry)
