History:
Silanus Ego Augustus was born March 14, 1964 to a couple of hippie parents. His father, Marcus O'Neill, was a former banker who was swept up in this new hippie fad and quit his successful, rich, material life. His mother, Amy Lagerhome, was a well-educated woman who was swept off her feet by Marcus and they married only a year after meeting each other. They had Silanus in a commune out in Oklahoma, not really the best place for a family, but hey they were high.Early Life
Now his original name according to the birth certificate was Bobby Sunface O'Neill, but he never ever told anyone his middle name for fear of bullying. His childhood was uneventful, pretty normal as hippie childhoods go. He was home-schooled with the best books and tutors money could buy and he learned very quickly. He reached a Senior high school level at the age of 16, learning calculus, physics, chem, history, and economics reaching the equivalent of all AP classes today. He came to reject his parents' views of immateriality and their high energy partying. He became contemptuous of their lifestyle and did his best to leave it all behind as quickly as possible. He completely ignored his parents went school-hunting, signing loans in his parents' names and applying for as mant scholarships as possible. He got an offer from RPI out in in Troy, NYCollege and The Sons of Ether
Bobby entered RPI on more or less a free ride and the first four years were basic college work. The histories, the sciences, maths, etc, and he made his senior thesis on the impracticality of robots using todays technology. Between his graduation and the starting his work for his Masters he discovered the new science of nanotechnology. One of the leading scientists on this was Kim Eric Drexler, a student working on his doctorate at MIT. Bobby then transferred to MIT to learn more about this new science, reading all the books on it and working Drexler. They worked together for a couple years, with Drexler publishing in 1986 and founding the Foresight Institute with his wife. Bobby became one of the researchers there, quickly thinking of possible ways to make nanotech work, and it's applications in the real world. Robots, weapons, medical procedures, cars, and anything imaginable he studied. He eventually became too radical in his ideas and too far forward-thinking even for Drexler and he was kicked out of the Institute right as he was almost finished with a working assembler. Down and out of a job, Bobby tried to go back to school, but no one would take him back since he was abandoned by Drexler. So he went and got an apartment and a low end job, which he only worked for a few weeks before becoming bored to tears. At home one night a strange man came up to his door and asked him to look at a scroll that he was having trouble deciphering and understanding. Bobby looked, and kept looking, and became entranced in what the document hinted at. It hinted at unlimited science and unlimited ideas, and when he told the man this a smile appeared.
"Very good, you are ready for us my boy."
The man brought bobby to an underground complex that looked much like a lab, filled with many people all working and scribbling notes, wearing white lab coats. Most had glasses.
"This is my lab, as a Master of Matter in the Sons of Ether."
"The Sons of Ether? What does this have to do with me?"
"We are scientists of the highest degree, using magick to realize our theories and ideas. I brought you here because you have an amazing grasp on science already. I think you would be an apt pupil."
"So you're saying I could just...create nanotech bots? Using my mind?"
"Precisely, my boy." The man smiled. 'By the way my name is Dr. Arthur Grayson. Welcome to the Sons of Ether."Magickal with a Chance of Betrayal
So began Bobby's journey into the land of magic. It was around this time that he began naming himself random Roman-sounding names. Things like Agrippa, Maximus, Claudius, and so on just so he could dissociate from his previous. He no longer wanted to be known as Bobby Sunface O'Neill the failed scientist. He wanted to be Maximus Augustus Magnus, the Master Oracle of the Sons of Ether. Unfortunately, he had to start small as all new mages do. First by identifying patterns in both living and unliving matter and then creating patterns of unified material. He learned how to alter his appearance and heal himself using Life Magic. After only 2 years he began creating matter from thin air and creating small biological forms. After 4 years he was considered an Adept at Matter. He wanted so desperately to create the first nanomachines and distribute them throughout the scientific community. He also wanted to shove his former partner's face into the mud and show him up. After much much work and long nights in the lab he was able to make machines using his mind. He could not make them small yet, that constantly eluded him. Arthur pushed him towards it and towards learning as much magick as possible. Finally by the time Maximus (that was his name for the nonce) was 30 he was able to manipulate Matter to the degree of a Master and he made his final breakthrough into nanomachines. He could make them do what he wished at whatever size. Unfortunately by this time he was also moderately insane. Driven hard and supported only by Arthur, Max was on the verge of complete mental collapse. Once he had completed his research he was able to calm down and publish his results in the Paradigma: The Journal for Etheric Science. He also took this time to learn more about the enemies the of the Sons, the Technocracy and the general enemies of mages, the Nefandi and the Marauders. He broadened his focus of Matter manipulation to include creation of simple life forms and to change unliving matter at will. Such things became child's play to him and he used them in conjunction with his nanotech. He began attending yearly meetings with other members of the Sons, publishing his findings in the Paradigma. His mind never fully recovered despite the time given to his studies and he found out why in the year 2000.
One day he woke up and he felt...different, like something was missing and yet like he was whole. He came into the lab and saw his Mentor constrained by men, other mages he presumed, and one of them spoke.
"You there, is this man your Mentor?"
"Ah, yes sir, and why is he held like this?"
"This man has been discovered to be a Nephandi, using his "students" to attempt to destroy the world. He is going to be executed and you will be brought for questioning."
"What? No, he can't be! I don't understand...he was such a caring teacher...you must be wrong! I don't believe it!"
His Mentor spoke: "Believe it boy! I was going to use your nanomachines to destroy all humankind! I even brainwashed you and controlled your mind to make you believe that YOU created these machines first! Pathetic mage, you are now broken!"
With those words his mind broke, shattered, discombobulated, use whatever word you wish, but it felt as if shards of glass were ripping through his head. He fell, screaming, holding his head until he had no more air and passed out.The Present Day
He awoke a few days later, his memory in shambles, not knowing exactly what happened after his Mentor was taken. He had forgotten how to make the nanos, but not his drive for making them. Parts of his memories were ripped out or torn to shreds, and he didn't even know where he was. Some alley somewhere, at night. He had a copy of the Paradigma and various memories of his magical powers. Over the next 10 years he battled his derangements, rebuilt his powers to an acceptable level and continued his quest for working nano-technology. He decided to live the life of an unknown hobo in the streets of this city, New York. He created a new lab for himself, disguised in a cardboard box, and would conduct his experiments as well as hone his powers in there. He is now mad, plain and simple, although his madness does not manifest in a destructive way. Instead he has his fascination with change, shiny shiny change. Over his years living as a hobo he has re-established most of his mind so that his psychosis is not nearly as deep as he leads people to believe. So now he lives the life of the Mad Scientist Silanus Ego Augustus, the hobo of New York City.
